We're delighted that joining us as guest speaker at our February networking breakfast is Portsmouth born and bred, former Commonwealth Games, European and World Championships and Olympic Games swimmer, Katy Sexton MBE!
With her World Championship gold medal win in 2003, Katy broke new ground by being the first British female winner of the gold. This great achievement was followed by a place on the GB team for the 100m and 200m backstroke events in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Her senior career began back in 1998 as a member of the GB World Championship team in Perth, Australia. At just 15 years of age, she was notable for being the youngest member of the squad. She went on to excel in club championships, following a gruelling training schedule throughout her school years and giving constant commitment to her sport.
A shoulder injury in 2001 set her back a few months, but her willpower and drive to succeed were evident when she nonetheless managed to qualify for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Furthermore, she even brought home a bronze medal from that event, an achievement of great personal significance to her.
Her gold-medal winning performance in 2003 in Barcelona even led to an MBE in the Queens New Year Honours list.
Katy narrowly missed out on qualifying for the London Olympic Games, in 2012. She now runs a successful swim school in Portsmouth.
